Weight lifting

Here are some videos depicting the safe and correct ways to work out with free weights. In NUS dragon boat, safety is as important, if not more important, than results.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. I can't swim!!! Can I still join dragonboat?
- The boat hardly capsizes. And we wear life vests on the boat all the time. Some of us can't swim and yet we survived through 2 or 3 years of dragonboating.

2. Is it a high commitment sports?
- We can't say no because we're a competitive team. We have about 4 competitions all year round so we definitely have to train hard to maintain our achievements. But it all depends on how you manage your time. Tentatively, ladies' land trainings are on Mon and Wed 6-830pm and water training is on Sat 9-12pm. Mens' land trainings are on Tue and Thu 6-8pm and water training is on Sat 8-10am.

3. I am afraid of getting big arms! (ladies)
- Initially you may bulk up from the strength trainings, but as you progress further, together with the right diet, you'll get toned. With this increased muscle mass, your metabolic rate actually increases, so actually it can help some of us lose weight:) as these muscles will burn more calories/energy. Dragonboat doesn't just emphasize on the arms. It is actually a full-body sport as we use our back and legs as well.

4. Guys: "It seems like the dragonboat guys are so muscular and fit! I don't think I'm good enough to be on the team!"
- No worries freshies! Fitness has to be trained up. We are no super human and we train hard in order to build up our fitness and strength. Most importantly, we are a team and we train hard together! So do try out first before saying no! Because you'll never know how far you can push yourselves! Come and enjoy the teamwork and camaraderie!

4. Ladies: " I can't do chin-ups!"
- We usually do assisted chin-ups (most of us were unable to do chin-ups when we first entered the team).

5. Do I need to have any sports background?
- Nope! It'll be great though if you have background on dragonboating/canoeing/sculling, but we are actually looking for people who are keen in learning and also have the right attitude to commit themselves to rowing for teamNUS Dragonboat. Most of us started this sport from scratch, but with the help of our seniors and teammates and coach, we have been able to push ourselves to greater heights.

6. I can't run fast/ I've not been running for a very long time
- We run together as a team. We believe in encouraging one another and improving together as a team.
